We have a PGC2 in our lab that we've been using for a while. We're thinking of replacing it with a newer NGC3 model because the PGC2 is over 25 years old.

May I ask, is the NGC3 fully compatible with the PGC2 vacuum gauges? We have no desire to replace the gauges at the moment.

Are the Pirani and hot cathode gauge connectors and the connector pinouts the same?

Hi mathias-fx,

Welcome to the AML Forums! In the large majority of cases, the NGC3 can be used as a direct plug-compatible replacement to the PGC2. Setup is a simple and intuitive procedure with settings for gauges, interlocks, relay assignments and trip levels all available from the front-panel. The NGC3 retains the popular 1U case format, dot-matrix LED display and all the gauge connectors are the same types as used on the PGC models.

If replacing a PGC instrument with an NGC3 the following should be noted:-
  • NGC3 has no power supply for capacitance manometers.
  • The auxiliary connector is a plug-in terminal block.
  • Remote logging and control via RS232 has a new protocol
  • The recorder output is scaled at 1volt/decade of collector current.
General improvements in NGC3
  • Longer, brighter LED display with more resolution and information.
  • Improved leakage, temperature-compensation and conformance of the electrometer.
  • Improved emission stability.
  • Discouragement of inappropriate emission current or degas and interruption of bakeout.
  • Reduced grid power in emission, leading to reduced outgassing.
  • Improved cooling and efficiency in the power supplies.
  • Dual, mag-lev fans with speed monitors, which are used alternately.
  • Essential interface data is printed on the rear panel.
  • Countdown/cancellation facility for imminent TSP firing.
  • Piranis are switchable from the front panel.
