If you are experiencing problems interfacing with an NGC2D or NGC3 via serial, check the following:
- The NGC2D/NGC3 must be connected to a serial port that provides the standard +/- 15 V signal swing of a standard RS232 port. Often, serial ports on laptops and some USB to serial adapters do not meet this requirement. Try other ports if they are available.
- Check the wiring between the PC and NGC2D; on the NGC2D, Pin 5 is GND, Pin 2 is Tx and Pin 3 is Rx. Use a straight though cable to connect to the PC.
- Perform a loopback test to check the cable and host serial port function.
- We recommend using a simple terminal program. An example free terminal program is TerraTerm; it can be downloaded here: https://ttssh2.osdn.jp/index.html.en
- Disable local echo and open the port.
- Unplug the serial cable from the NGC2D/NGC3 and use a metallic object to bridge pins 2 and 3 of the free end of the cable.
- Whilst bridging the pins, type a character into the terminal; if the cable is ok and the pins bridged correctly, the character you typed will appear in the terminal.
- Remove the short between pins 2 and 3, then type a character into the terminal. This time, the character you entered will not be displayed.
- We recommend using a simple terminal program. An example free terminal program is TerraTerm; it can be downloaded here: https://ttssh2.osdn.jp/index.html.en
- Ensure that the following serial port settings are used: Baud 9600, 8 bit, parity none, stop 1, flow control none.
